Our deepest condolences on the passing of Professor Emeritus Charles Backstrom
This past Thursday, September 4, Professor Emeritus Charles Backstrom passed away. A kind and generous person, a tireless servant of the University, and a noteworthy scholar, Professor Backstrom was a pillar of this department from 1959 until his retirement in 1997. Among his lasting contributions, he created the department's internship program, for which he received the University's John Tate Award for Undergraduate Advising. In recognition of Professor Backstrom's impact, a former student and collaborator, Leonard Robbins, created the Charles Backstrom Scholarship, which we award to some of our best students. Professor Backstrom's passing is a loss to this department, this university, and the larger community.
Professor Backstrom's obituary will appear in the Sunday, September 7, edition of the Minneapolis and St. Paul newspapers. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, September 13, at the Prospect Park Church.
