Robert & Shirley Holt Discovery Fellowship

Rogert & Shirley

to support graduate students. This scholarship fund is named for Professor Emeritus Robert Holt and his wife, Shirley. Professor Holt taught comparative politics and was dean of the University's Graduate School.

Frank J. Sorauf Graduate Fellowship

The Frank J. Sorauf Graduate Fellowship to support graduate students in American politics. It was the gratitude of two former students, Steve Ansolabehere and Wally Hilke, both of whom worked for Frank as undergraduate research assistants, that led to the establishment of the Frank Sorauf Graduate Fellowship. Frank was one of the country’s top scholars in several areas: American judiciary, political parties, elections, and campaign finance. He wrote the most widely-used textbook on political parties, Party Politics in America. Frank was selected as a Regents’ Professor (the top 1% of University faculty), and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Andrew Lawrence Dickinson Memorial Fellowship

Portrait: Andrew Lawrence DickinsonThis fellowship provides funding for one or two advanced doctoral students each year to do short-term research abroad. In keeping with the compassionate spirit of Andrew's life and work, a preference is given to students demonstrating a commitment to connect political theory and practice so as to theorize an ethical conception of international politics that is both innovative and responsive to concerns of power and oppression. "Reflections On Life and Work", a collection of essays, is dedicated to the memory and living inspiration of Andrew Dickinson, a talented second-year PhD student in our department whose life was cut short in a roadside accident. Reflections is a wonderful tribute to who Andy was as a graduate student and how he specifically has impacted many of us in the Department of Political Science. For a copy of Reflections, contact the Department of Political Science.

Professor Charles Backstrom Undergraduate Scholarship in Political Science

Portrait: Charles BackstromThis scholarship fund is named for Professor Emeritus Charles Backstrom who taught American government courses, particularly state and local politics. It is with respect and affection that one of Charles Backstrom's former students, Leonard Robins, decided to create this scholarship to assist students with tuition, fees, and the purchase of books and materials. Recipients of this scholarship are asked to write thank you notes to the Backstrom family.
