University of Minnesota: Pre-Dissertation Fellowships
William W. Stout and Thomas F. Wallace Fellowship
Eligibility: For graduate students in the humanities or social sciences who are in the intermediate years of the Ph.D. (i.e., normally students currently in their second or third year of graduate study).
Award: Stipend: $16,000 for the academic year, plus tuition and health insurance. (2005-06)
Deadline: December 1st. (Department pre-deadline will be around November 1st.)

Relevant graduate programs that offer the Ph.D. may nominate one student. Up to two awards. Stipend: $16,000 for the academic year, plus tuition.
University of Minnesota: Dissertation Fellowships
Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship
Eligibility: Outstanding final-year Ph.D. candidates who are making timely progress toward the degree--typically those entering their fifth year of graduate study.
Award: A stipend of $16,000 for the academic year, plus tuition and health insurance. (2005-06)
Deadline: Second week of March. (Department deadline will be in early February.)
The purpose of the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship (DDF) program is to give outstanding final-year Ph.D. candidates who are making timely progress toward the degree--typically those entering their fifth year of graduate study--an opportunity to complete the dissertation within the upcoming academic year by devoting full-time effort to the research and writing of the dissertation. Candidates must be nominated by their graduate program's Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) to an all-University competition. Up to 50 Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are awarded annually. Nomination deadline is March 11, 2005 for the 2005-2006 academic year.
Recipients of the fellowship, in 2004-2005, will receive a stipend of $16,000 for the academic year, plus full tuition for thesis credits. Eligible recipients are also covered by comprehensive health insurance, including subsidized dependent and dental care.
Instructions to nominees and application forms are available from the DGS in late fall.
Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant
Eligibility: Grants are available to support dissertation research, such as domestic travel and expenses for fieldwork, postage, and photocopying.
Award: Up to $2500.
Deadline: October 1 and March 1. (If deadline falls on a weekend, then the following Monday.)
University of Minnesota: Miscellaneous
Woman's Club of Minneapolis Fellowship
Eligibility: This award is open to students registered in the University of Minnesota Graduate School at the time of application who hold U.S. citizenship; must demonstrate high scholarship and leadership ability. Special
consideration will be given to students who are planning to remain in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Qualified women are encouraged to apply.
Award: $5000 Stipend. (2005-06)
Deadline: December 1st.
Torske Klubben Fellowship for Minnesota Residents
Eligibility: This fellowship award has been established to support outstanding students currently enrolled in the Graduate School in any field, who are Minnesota residents. Applicants must have outstanding academic achievement, excellent leadership potential, and an interest in or connection with Norway.
Award: $1000 Stipend for academic year plus full tuition. (2005-06)
Deadline: March 1st.
Zoltai Graduate Fellowship
Eligibility: For students admitted to, or currently enrolled in, any field in the UM Graduate School who demonstrate a strong interest in and connection with Hungary or its culture.
Award: Stipend of up to $6000 for academic year. (2005-06)

Best Dissertation Award
Eligibility: Each year the Graduate School recognizes the University's top recent Ph.D. graduates by presenting ‘best dissertation’ awards. The department requests nominations from faculty in late February each year. If you wish to be considered for this award, you should discuss it with your dissertation advisor.
Award: The recipients receive an honorarium of $1,000 and a special certificate.

University of Minnesota: Study Abroad
Doctoral Dissertation International Research Grants, including the Myrna G. Smith International Graduate Fellowship
Eligibility: Grants are available to conduct research abroad for six weeks to six months.
Award: Up to $5000. (2005-06)
Deadline: October 1st and March 1st.
Fulbright Scholarship
Eligibility: Offers a variety of grants for one year of study or research abroad to over 100 countries. Applicants must have proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country. Campus information and applications are available in May each year for the upcoming academic year.
Award: Monthly stipends based on living costs in the host country, supplemental health and accident insurance, and book and research allowances. Round-trip transportation is also provided.
Campus Deadline: September 10.
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships (International Studies)
Eligibility: To promote the study of modern foreign languages supporting international studies within graduate and professional schools. All graduate students are eligible, although fellowships will not be awarded to graduate students who major in French, German or Spanish to study the language of their major. They would be eligible to study another language. Each applicant must clearly indicate how a FLAS fellowship is essential to her/his professional development and will contribute to the field of international studies.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. Foreign students are NOT eligible.
The department may nominate up to three students.
Award: Summer: - $2,400 stipend plus reimbursement of tuition and selected fees (2005-06)
Academic Year - $14,000 stipend plus reimbursement of tuition and selected fees (2005-06)
Deadline: February 14. Department deadline is typically early January.

Eligibility: To promote the study of modern foreign languages supporting West European Studies within graduate and professional schools. All graduate students are eligible, although fellowships will not be awarded to graduate students who major in French, German or Spanish to study the language of their major. They would be eligible to study another language. Each applicant must clearly indicate how a FLAS fellowship is essential to her/his professional development and will contribute to the field of Western European Studies.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. Foreign Students are NOT eligible.
The department may nominate up to three students.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
Eligibility: Provides 10 months of study or research in Germany for advanced graduate students. Applicants must be 18 to 32. Campus information and applications are available in July each year for the upcoming academic year.
Award: Monthly stipends range from €795 to €975 (2005-06)
Campus Deadline: September 10th.
Luce Scholars Program to Asia
Eligibility: Provides one-year internships in Asia to persons who have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment. Persons from all fields except Asian Affairs may apply. Applicants must be under 30 when the internship begins. Campus information and applications are available in June.
Award: Luce Scholars receive a significant basic stipend and, if necessary, separate cost-of-living or housing allowances. Economy class air transportation and medical insurance are also covered.
Campus Deadline: November 1st
