Minor

A minor serves to indicate the competence of a student in a fairly focused area. A minor is seen as being complementary to a student's major program or academic interests.

Minor Requirements

Application Procedures for a Minor

A total of 16 political science semester credits is required to complete the minor. These credits include both upper- and lower-division courses.

Application Procedures

Students may declare a minor in political science by meeting with the Undergraduate Adviser for the Department of Political Science. Contact Rose Miskowiec, Undergraduate Adviser, at 612/624-8517 to declare the minor or stop by the advising office in 1482 Social Sciences. Prior to declaring a minor in political science, students should have completed at least one political science course.

Preparatory and Advanced Coursework

All students should take at least one 1XXX level political science course. A maximum of 8 semester credits may be completed at the 1XXX level.
Students must complete a minimum of 8 upper-division credits in political science to include courses from two of the four subfields. The four subfields are Political Theory (POL 32XX/42XX), Comparative Government (POL 34XX/44XX), International Relations (POL 38XX/48XX), and American Government (POL 33XX/43XX, 35XX/45XX, or 37XX/47XX).

Residency Requirement

Only one course may be transferred from another school and used to satisfy one course requirement in the minor.

Other Requirements

Grading Requirements

All minors must take their political science courses for a letter grade (ABCDF). Courses cannot be taken on a pass/fail (S/N) basis. Only grades of C- or better will be applicable to the political science major. Grades of S, N, D, or F will not count toward completion of the minor.

Internship and Directed Study

A maximum of 3 internship credits (POL 3080) may apply to the minor. Directed Study credits (POL 4970) and Fieldwork credits (POL 3070) cannot apply to the minor.

Global Studies Majors

Global Studies majors must take at least 8 of their upper-division credits in the Political Theory or American Government subfields.

Transfer Credits

A maximum of one course may be transferred into the political science minor.
